Against the Light
18 October – 28 December 2019
Karyn Fendley’s landscape paintings capture the essence of the coastal landscapes of northern New South Wales. To research this series, the artist spent time exploring the beaches and waterways of the Arakwal, Bundjalung and Yuraygir National Parks, stretching between Pottsville and Wooli.
Rich colour, flattened perspectives and dramatic dark to light transitions are hallmarks of Fendley’s painting practice.
With their bright skies, deep shadows and silhouettes, these artworks depict the extremes of lightness and darkness and the transient spaces created by shadows, observed in our sharply sunlit coastal landscapes.
