Dion and Andrew collaborated on ‘Prickles the Unhuggable Bear’ last year for Swell Sculpture Festival, taking out the main prize. M|Arts is delighted to present two new collections of work by these artists, who will be exhibiting in the Downstairs Gallery in October.
ABOUT DION PARKER
Dion is an award winning multidisciplinary visual artist who focuses predominantly on sculpture, painting and drawing and is based on the Gold Coast, Queensland. He enjoys using traditional art practices to explore a modern style with a focus on fun, beauty and simplicity.
He began exhibiting locally and interstate in 2011 where he won the swell smalls “people’s choice award.” In his first year. Since then he has won “emerging artist of the year” and most recently won the major award in 2018 for his collaboration with Andrew Cullen titled Prickles the Unhuggable Bear.
Enjoying the freedom of choice sculpture allows Dion has worked in a variety of mediums including bronze, steel, timber, resin and recycled materials. With works in public and private collections around Australia including the HOTA permanent collection, Royal North Shore Hospital Sydney and Marts Precinct, Dion’s work is becoming highly sought after.
ABOUT ANDREW CULLEN
Andrew Cullen is a visual artist exhibiting with a preference for sculpture and painting. From his first group exhibition in London in 1997, he has had the opportunity to travel widely, living in England, Vietnam, Colombia, Japan and Indonesia. He has exhibited paintings and sculptures in each of these countries, with his first solo exhibition being held in Hiroshima, Japan in 2005. Andrew predominantly sculpts in metals and timber and paints most often in oils or spray paint. His first significant public art piece, ‘Dune Grass’, was exhibited in the Swell Sculpture Festival in 2010. Most recently, he has been the recipient of the 2015 Sculptor’s Society Tony Palmer Award, Swell Sculpture Festival ‘People’s Choice’ in 2016 and overall winner this year (2018) in collaboration with Dion Parker. This winning entry ‘Prickles’ was made at the SOFA gallery and workshop where Andrew is co-founder and Director.
